SEA Preparation: Tips for Parents of Students Just Entering Standard 4

Your child has just started Standard 4.

So, what should you be doing as a parent?

You don't need to panic about SEA yet.

But you also shouldn't wait until Standard 5 to start paying attention.

Standard 4 is the time to get organised, identify any gaps and put the right support system in place.

1. Get the Syllabus—and Follow the Plan

One of the first things we recommend to parents is simple:

Get a copy of the syllabus.

Don't just download it and forget about it. Read it. Understand it. Follow it.

Think of a construction worker building a house.

A construction worker doesn't arrive at a site with a pile of blocks and start building randomly. He works from the building plans.

The plans tell him what needs to be built, what comes next and how everything fits together.

The syllabus is your child's building plan.

It gives you a picture of what your child needs to learn throughout the year.

And our Grade A SEA Skills Checklist can help you follow that plan by keeping track of the skills your child needs to develop.

You don't need to teach everything yourself. But you should know what is supposed to be covered so you can follow your child's progress.

2. Look Back Before You Move Forward

Now that you know where you're going, take a look at where your child is starting from.

If your child had gaps in Standard 3, this is the time to work on them.

Don't assume that because your child has moved into Standard 4, those gaps have somehow disappeared.

If your child is still struggling with basic:

• Addition

• Subtraction

• Multiplication

• Division

• Understanding what a question is asking

• Choosing the correct operation

• Simple word problems

• Reading and understanding instructions

pay attention.

If a child struggles to understand a basic addition, subtraction or multiplication question, we know that more complex questions are likely to become challenging too.

As the work becomes more demanding, those foundational weaknesses can make everything else harder.

And if your child didn't get much academic work done during the July/August vacation, don't panic.

Find out where they are now.

Start there.

Strengthen the foundation.

Then keep building.

You don't have to make up everything at once.

3. Build a Support System Around Your Child

You don't have to do this alone.

Your child's support system can include:

Their teacher — who can help you understand how your child is progressing in class.

A tutor — who can provide focused support where your child needs it.

Other parents — who can share information, resources and encouragement.

You, the parent — who stays informed, monitors progress and makes sure your child gets the support they need.

And, of course, your child has to be part of the team too.

The goal isn't for everyone to do the same thing.

It's for everyone to understand the plan and support the child along the way.

Don't Wait Until Standard 5

Standard 4 gives you something that becomes increasingly valuable as SEA approaches:

time.

Use it.

Get the syllabus.Follow the plan.Use the checklist.Look for gaps from Standard 3.Work on the foundation.Build your child's support system.

If you see a foundational gap, seek help early.

Because just like building a house, it's much easier to fix the foundation before you start building the next level.
