As the school term begins, many parents of children who are entering standard 4 this year are filled with anxiety. This is usually the time when thoughts of the S.E.A. exam become the forefront of their minds and the age-old worry about their child being able to get into a "prestige" school is right on the top of their list. Fear not parents, as an educator who has helped several students through this process, I am here to provide you with a few tips to help you through this time.
Firstly, let me make it clear that SEA prep does not begin in standard 4 rather it is the culmination of what has been taught throughout your child's academic life thus far. With that being said, here are 3 tips for parents of students entering standard 4.
1. Get a hold of the syllabus: As a parent, one of the first things you should do is to get your hands on the syllabus. The syllabus is the topics that will be covered by your child's teacher. You will be in the position to work with your child's teacher to ensure that the work is covered.
2. Create a study schedule: Consistency over quantity is needed with studying therefore a study timetable is needed at all stages, especially in preparation for any exam. Just studying for a few minutes 5-6 days a week will be beneficial to your child. If you need help creating a study plan, click here.
3. Create a support team: connect with fellow parents whose children are doing the exam or whose kids have done it previously. There are also several support groups on Facebook where you can connect with other parents and share resources.
