3 Mistakes Parents Make That Hurt Their Child's Academic Progress

As parents, we all want what's best for our kids especially when it comes to education. Even though this is a fact, we at Grade A Tutoring and Learning Centre can safely say that sometimes we encounter parents who unwillingly negatively affect their child's education by making 3 big mistakes. In this week's blog post, we'll be looking at the three common mistakes that parents make that negatively affect their child's education.

  1. Leaving it all to the teacher. Yes teachers are paid to teach your kids but a teacher can only do so much. A teacher typically has several students in a classroom and not all of these kids work at the same pace. As a parent, you have a responsibility to ensure that your child completes homework assignments and projects. You also have a duty work with your child at home especially if you have identified any problem areas. At the end of the day, it is your child. A teacher can only do so much, the rest is up to you, the parent.

  2. Staying to long to seek help. This is another big problem and one which we at Grade A encounter on a regular basis. Many parents know that their child is struggling but they do not take action in the early stages. At SEA time, for example, many parents seek out the aid of a tutor as late as January even though the exam is just a few months away. This is one area where it's better to fix the problem early since it will only be more difficult to fix when left for last minute. if you know that your child is having difficulty seek help early. If you can't afford a tutor seek out friends and family who may be able to lend a helping hand.

  3. Thinking that the Tutor can fix problems in the blink of an eye. Tutors are hired to assist students who are struggling academically however it takes three people to make it work: the tutor, the parent and the child. Without each person putting in their share of work, the student will never reap the full benefits of having a tutor. in addition, some parents have unrealistic expectations of the process, expecting to see dramatic results in just 2 sessions! Tutoring is a process and as was stated previously, it requires all parties involved working hand in hand to reap the true benefits.

So there you have it. The top three ways in which parents are sabotaging their kids' education. If you are guilty of any of the above, take action now and work on fixing the situation. Don't forget that at Grade A we are here to help your child to succeed.
