Starting primary school is a major milestone for both children and parents. Many parents focus mainly on ABCs and counting, but school readiness involves much more than academic skills alone.

Helping your child build confidence, independence, and early learning skills before entering school can make the transition smoother and less stressful.

Here are a few important ways parents can help prepare children for primary school.

1. Practice Early Literacy and Number Skills

Children entering school should begin recognizing:

  • letters,

  • numbers,

  • colours,

  • and basic shapes.

They should also practice identifying the letters in their name and writing their name independently. These foundational skills help children feel more confident in the classroom environment.

2. Encourage Fine Motor Development

Fine motor skills are important for writing, colouring, cutting, and other classroom activities.

Simple activities such as:

  • tracing,

  • colouring,

  • drawing,

  • using crayons,

  • and practicing pencil grip

can help strengthen hand control and coordination.

3. Teach Children to Follow Instructions

In a classroom setting, teachers work with many students at once. Children should practice listening carefully and following simple instructions independently.

This can include:

  • completing small tasks,

  • packing away items,

  • following routines,

  • and listening to directions at home.

4. Build Independence

Before entering primary school, children should begin learning simple independent skills such as:

  • opening lunch kits,

  • packing bags,

  • using the bathroom independently,

  • and managing basic routines.

Independence helps children adjust more comfortably to the school environment.

5. Read Together Daily

Reading with children every day helps develop:

  • vocabulary,

  • listening skills,

  • comprehension,

  • and communication.

Even a few minutes of reading daily can make a significant difference in language development and school readiness.
